Sometimes a good cleaning on old systems can solve problems like
that. Blow out all the dust with a can or two of compressed air. Clean
all the removable/socketed chips with some good electrical contact
cleaner (I use TV tuner cleaner from Radio Shack and some cotton swabs -
spray the cleaner on the swabs not the chips). The chips pop back in a
lot easier than they come out once cleaned (keep track of the notch mark
on the chip so you don't put them in backwards). Just be careful when
taking them out not to bend the pins (take them out evenly). I have a
couple chip pullers but they usually don't work very well so I use a
small screwdriver and work the chips out from side to side a little at a
time. Sometimes just cleaning the RAM contacts is enough to fix lockups
but I've had to clean all the socketed chips before on systems that were
older. I once cleaned a board from a computer that was through a fire by
washing it with alcohol and blasting it with compressed air to remove
the soot. You can check for heat damaged chips by spraying chips with
chip cooler also but that can be tricky if it runs fine for awile.
