Thanks for all the suggestions.

I did try reseating all the cards (as well as the memory) but saw
no change.  I avoided using any cleaner or lubricant because I'm never
quite sure what the long term result of that is.  (I have a tube of
Maplins contact lube which is great for switches and so on, but as I say
I wouldn't like it on chips or cards.  A true cleaner I suppose is
different.)

I suppose it could be power supply -- they seem to be the least reliable
components of these things.  Strange that the fault is always the same
though -- display frozen and blinkenlights low and steady.  I did link
up a serial KDB link at one point, and saw it was in a spinlock, vut
that didn't tell me much more.

I've seen a mismatched video card do that on an Intel, so I suppose that
is another good suspect.  Problem is I don't have anything to swap in.

[The suggestion of buying an old Mac would be a good one -- if I had
anywhere to put it!  I'd have to get rid of my old Amigas first... (:-)]
