[bedevtalk] ping for BONE?

Sorry to wake this list from its long sleep (:-)), but I've hit a roadblock
that I hope someone can help me with.

I'm trying to compile a working version of good ol' 'ping' for R5 BONE.
The supplied one doesn't have the switch options I want, so I grabbed
a source of an early version and am trying to get it to compile before
I actually try to modify it.

There seem to be a lot of little incompatibilities, and my attempts to
resolve them have just resulted in a crashing executable.

The main catch seems to be that BONE's 'getprotobyname' just returns
null for "icmp". Looking at a 'strings' dump of the Be ping, it appears
to access icmp OK, but it doesn't even mention 'getprotobyname'.
Is that even supposed to work under BONE?

So how do they do it? Anybody actually *have* a working source?
That'd be marvellous...

[The reason I want to modufy ping is that I want one that doesn't wait
a long time if there's no response. I have a home net, and when I shut
down my BeOS machine, I want to ensure that the other machine(s) are shut
down too.]
