I'm happy with the current system that doesn't clutter the desktop with
a Workspaces menu. I know what's in each workspace (each has usual
uses) and use the ALT-Fn key to switch between them. If I want to
find a window in a certain program, I just use the deskbar's list of
applications and select the window, which then switches to that
workspace and shows the window. Workspaces are secondary; I really
only care about application windows.
But that's just my opinion. I use the Linux workspace switcher or the
alt-shift-arrow hotkeys for switching between Linux workspaces. And on
both OSes, I find workspaces useful. Even more than multimonitor - got
3 screens at work and a tired hand from mousing around so much.
