Clarrifying I don't want folders or hierarchies to go away.

 Maybe the desktop should just provide you with a view of it's content with virtual folders. An itelligent window not an intelligent agent.

Like today/yesterday, audio/video/text (based on mime), and a folder for all.

Going $HOME/config/desktop should still show you all the files as they are in that folder.

Or heck maybe all real files should go into $HOME and be tagged with an attribute TRCK:OnDesktop.
