Just to set it straight: the layout engine is not supposed to become
public API in R1.

It's probably true that those who do are rewarded (which isn't too
surprising, though) - but don't think you'll find everything that is on
the Haiku image now will end up being part of R1 (for example, googlefs
is a candidate for removal IMO).
Beyond that, there are only few and subtle API extensions in Haiku
AFAICT (or do remember right now). Are you thinking of something in
particular?

You'll always have to find a balance of what people want to do, and the
stuff that has to be done. There is little point in cloning R5 exactly
- it must at least run on current hardware, and while reimplementing
its API, it also doesn't make sense to copy all of its shortcomings
when a better way takes just as long (but is more rewarding for those
who actually do the work and the end result). And since every little
detail needs attention, anyway, you do the math :-)

Not sure about the symbol thing, but it would definitely fit :-)

Bye,
   Axel.
